my brain only works on vacation, apparently

I recently went to Taos, New Mexico and promised myself I’d write a poem a day. It seemed daunting. Lately, I haven’t had the energy or the “feels” to write anything so I wasn’t really expecting much to come of it. But to my benefit, it rained most of the trip. I found myself caught inside either with a coffee early in the day or a glass of wine in the evening, and my notebook.

Without my homely distractions, I was surprised at how easy everything flowed out of my mind and my heart onto paper. Is this why people do writing and book retreats? I was excited to have this opportunity, but also sad that I couldn’t make these opportunities happen at home.

I start work at 8AM, and then I’m off to the gym right after. When I come home, I need to make dinner and take care of the kitties. But even by then, I’m so mentally drained from the day that I just end up watching a show that requires zero brain cells. Then I’m in bed by 9:30PM.

The only time I have left is in the mornings, but I like to use that time for a morning run, reading, and obviously my skincare routine (have to keep this face glowing!). Some may say to wake up earlier, but I already wake up at 6 AM. Plus, the mornings are getting darker as winter approaches. I have the weekends but those are filled with being social and errands.

I don’t know the answer yet, but I’m determined to find a way. Any helpful advice would be appreciated. ❤
