Let’s dive right into it.
- Don’t feel bad about it. Going to the movies alone, honestly, is one of the greatest experiences in life. I’m not exaggerating.
- Buy a ticket close to the aisle. Some may say you should get center. But I always prefer an efficient exit if the need arises.
- Wear something comfortable. It’s not like you’re trying to impress anyone.
- Buy snacks at your local drugstore and sneak them in. Unless you’re there for the popcorn. In that case, get the extra butter.
- But before snacks, you should treat yourself to dinner before the movie.
I’m going to get off track a bit, because that’s what I do. I went to the movies alone tonight. Before, I bought myself dinner at the restaurant/pub next door. It was a sports bar, so I totally fit in*. But no matter what place you choose, always sit at the bar.
So let me rephrase #5. Treat yourself to dinner as long as you sit at the bar.
When I sat at the bar tonight, I had my delicious Chicken Tinga tacos. I was pretending I understood the sports happening in front of me, but I also had the chance to talk to someone who had lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. And although they hadn’t gone to the movies since 2018, it was still nice just having a conversation with someone. No intentions, no pressure – just talking.
6. Laugh, cry, react normally to the movie. I get the impression that people are scared to show their emotions in a theatre. But that is what makes a theatre-going experience special – feeling everyone’s reactions.
7. Clean up your mess. I know they pay people to do that, but just throw away any garbage and be a respectful human.
8. Afterward, go to the bar next door. Chances are, by rules of proximity, someone in that bar has seen the movie you just saw.
You don’t go to the movies to watch a movie, you go for an experience. You need to let it sit, you need to reflect. Or you need a second drink. Both count.
I highly encourage solo movie dates. Everyone’s doing it.
-Your fellow cinephile.
*This is sarcasm – I know nothing about sports.
