After reading this book, I saw on Goodreads that it was the winner for Best Romantasy in 2023, which honestly made me gag a little. They actually have a category for that now? No wonder when I got to those romantic scenes, I squirmed in my seat and looked around expecting my Mother to pop over my shoulder. I’ve never read a romance because I am not interested in being told in explicit detail what is going on in the bedroom (or forest in this case). What ever happened to mystery, tension, and your imagination? I prefer the Victorian romance of intense staring, quirky jabs, and ballroom dancing - where the slightest touch sends a jolt to their heart.

With that said, this was still a captivating read. The story was well thought out, and and the characters (human and dragons) were so likable. I’m a sucker for fantasies because they take us to a world so unlike our own, a world we’d prefer to live in. I’m still trying to figure out why - I would have likely died within the first 3 chapters of this book if I fell in.

I highly recommend this book if you’re looking to have fun with some light reading. Yarros pulls you in with the first page and keeps you there until you’ve read all 500 pages in 2 days. And if you’re in a cafe packed with people while reading the romance scenes - don’t worry, they can’t read the pages from that far.
