TBH, I had no idea who Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark were before I read this book. I didn’t even know they had a podcast about true crime (it’s called “My Favorite Murder”). What caught my attention was the book’s title: “Stay Sexy and Don’t get Murdered”. I literally thought this was going to tell me how me be safe on the streets of Chicago in a mini-skirt - well, something along those lines. After reading a few reviews, I think this actually worked to my advantage as a lot of readers who’d been listening to this duo’s podcast, didn’t enjoy the book. But I did!

I really enjoyed the structure of the stories. The book jumped back and forth between Karen and Georgia as they described snippets of their life and the lessons learned from these personal stories. I listened to this as an audiobook, but it’s framed so nicely that I would have also loved reading it. I reminisced in their nostalgic moments we shared growing up such as:

  • calling friends on landlines to meet up at some random location (hoping they’d actually show up)

  • babysitting younger siblings while your parents were out (not knowing exactly where)

  • having unrestricted access to horror movies as a child because parents just didn’t care

  • the nightmare of being a 13 year old girl

Of course, Karen and Georgia referenced a bunch of true crime stories into their memoir. It sounds ill-fitting, but they make it work! Remember, it’s natural for the pair with their murder podcast and all.
