a eulogy to my TBR pile

It started with high hopes and unrealistic New Year goals. But things aren’t looking great – and although it’s only mid-year, I think it’s time to accept my to-be-read pile, will not-be-read. I blame it on the cat book. “I am a Cat” by Soseki sounded like such a great idea to start off the year. But being written in 1905, at 500 pages, translated from Japanese, AND the cat – the main character by the way – was terribly boring? I wanted to stop less than halfway through. But I persevered because how could I give up on my first book of the year!

Well, I finished that book and it had one of the worst endings I’ve ever read in my lifetime. It is you, cat, that started the downfall of my TBR pile. I hope you’re still stuck in that jar.

Another one in the graveyard is Albert Einstein’s “Theory of Relativity”. This one I couldn’t even finish because I could no longer comprehend the letters (and numbers) on the page. I severely overestimated my intellect and was rightly humbled.

Others on the waiting list for last rites:

“Jane Austen: The Secret Radical”

“Algorithms to Live By”

“Between Two Kingdoms”

“The Labyrinth of Spirits”

“Barchester Towers”

“Night Bus”

“Android Karenina”

“The Cat Who Saved the Library”

Need I go on? Day by day, their potential gets covered in dust. My only hope is that the Cat who saves the library, does so by ridding it of my Soseki failure.
