"Eileen" by Ottessa Moshfegh

Exquisite writing capturing the depressing inner-monologue of a broken, young woman.

Rating:

It was more bearable than “Lapvona”. I’ve said it before - Otessa is a fantastic writer. I just wish it wasn’t about incest, murder, and depression. With that said, it’s just my opinion - I clearly want to absorb other feelings and content when reading.

As my cousin put it, “Eileen” is a slow-burn. I was literally about 80% of the way through before anything significant happened in the story (which KILLED me). The reader has to endure the mind ramblings of this 24 year old woman living at home with her drunk father, while wishing he were dead and not dead at the same time. I had a huge issue with Eileen - she constantly complained about how she hated herself and how she was treated by others. Yet she was lazy, a slob, and made no effort to improve her life.

If you were a fan of this book, I really want to understand your mind. Let’s talk!
