"Of Women and Salt" by Gabriela Garcia

A lot of interesting stories crammed into one.

I only say this book was ok because I wanted more. Gabriela Garcia weaves together stories and histories of a family of Cuban women, but we needed more story (especially from Dolores, her absent mother, Cecilia, and Maria Isabel). We needed more of their background to understand why the “force” was lost and why its meaning was lost over time between the women. We clearly see that in later generations there is a lack of communication- almost like Mothers keeping secrets just to keep their daughters safe. But when did that start? We see the events unfold in Dolores’ story (even though that didn’t work as planned) - but did it start there? Was the only good man Maria Isabel’s? How was it that all the women following her ended up with alcoholics and abusers?

There are too many questions and not enough support to try to answer them. Garcia should either come back and give each character their own book, or in her next book don’t try to involve so many characters that heavily contribute to the story. Because this is such a short book, I do still recommend it. It’s great writing and you do get to know the characters enough to become involved in their story. But you will be wanting more…
