…it is the older Germans who were there who should feel guilt. We were not here. We ourselves did not do this.

That is what a lot of us tell ourselves in regard to the 400 years of slavery, and even the continued racial segregation pre-Civil Rights movement. This quote is given by a group of current German students when asked if they felt guilty for what Germany did when the Nazis took power. But wait, let them finish:

But we do feel that, as the younger generation, we should acknowledge and accept the responsibility. And for the generations that come after us, we should be the guardians of the truth.

Why hasn’t this thought process been accepted in America when it comes to racism? Isabel Wilkerson will explain that to you in “Caste: The Origins of our Discontents”. Her research is astounding and she cohesively explains her ideas and findings to us with international parallels and real-life moments. It all makes sense when Isabel explains it. No matter your race, her book will infuriate you, as well as make you feel despondent and ashamed. But in return she offers clarity - and it is completely worth it.

We can not ignore our past, we must also be the guardians of the truth. With that acceptance we can start to change America.
