"American Dirt" by Jeanine Cummins

Captivating thriller, but remember it’s fiction.

Rating:

I don’t typically read fictional thrillers. The last one I read was “The Woman in the Window” and I didn’t really enjoy that one - too predictable and a bit outrageous. JUST GO OUTSIDE LADY. However, I liked “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins. It was a loving and moving story about a Mother and Son - and how far she would go to ensure his safety. I listened to this as an audiobook and would listen on my way running errands. But a few times I found myself getting so immersed that I’d forget where I was walking to or would just walk right past my destination to finish the chapter. In this book, Mother (Lydia) and Son (Luca) were running to America from the Mexican cartel that killed the rest of their family.

So, yes, remember this is fictional and it could be a bit outlandish at times. It would be best to pick it up as a “light read” and don’t even try to read between the lines. I recently saw there is so much controversy on this book - but the same goes with any fictional book. It’s up to the reader to remind themselves that they can’t stereotype people based on what is read in a story.
