The thunder trembles and I know you’re near.
I brace for the whip of the wind and
Psych myself up for the onslaught of the devastating downpour.
Your powerful presence knows no limits.
Even weighed down by our soaked shirts and shoes,
I stumble while you soar.
I fear the fury,
the tunneling twisters,
And heavy hail.
And after enduring this storm for 38 years,
I still expect the unexpected.
It’s every weatherman’s nightmare.
Then comes that brief, beautiful moment when I can breathe.
Deeply inhaling a calmness I always forget exists.
Sighing out the tension through my aching teeth.
The ground grumbles and I know you’re near.
And I smile, knowing I’d pass up life’s perfect rainbow any day
To go barefoot in the rain.
